Hot off the success of the latest Mission: Impossible movie, star Tom Cruise now has his eyes set on a Jack Reacher sequel. Paramount Pictures has announced Jack Reacher 2 will arrive in theaters on October 21st, 2016 and will reunite Cruise with his The Last Samurai director, Ed Zwick. Based on the bestselling books by Lee Child, the sequel was originally written by The Equalizer and The Expendables 2 writer, Richard Wenk, with Zwick and Love & Other Drugs writer Marshall Herskovitz currently working on a re-write. Child previously revealed that the sequel will be adapted from the 18th book in the series, Never Go Back, which finds Reacher returning to Virginia to meet Major Susan Turner, the woman currently holding his old military police headquarters job and who has helped him in the past, but who he has only spoken to over the phone. Though no other casting has been announced, The Wrap previously reported that The Avengers star Cobie Smulders was in talks to play the female lead, which they referred to as “Danika” and not “Susan”. The first Jack Reacher was a big hit oversees earning around $215 million worldwide on a budget of around $60 million. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed that film, but will not be involved in the sequel. Jack Reacher 2’s October release will currently go up against two other sequels – the horror film Ouija 2 and a fifth Underworld movie. Production on Jack Reacher 2 is expected to begin in November with Cruise to likely follow that up with Mission: Impossible 6 next summer.
