Next year may bring us Batman versus Superman and Captain America versus Iron Man, but 2017 it will be all about Caesar versus Woody. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Woody Harrelson is set to star as a villain in the 2017 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sequel, War of the Planet of the Apes which will be the third installment in Fox’s Planet of Apes prequel saga. Details on the upcoming film are being held tightly under wraps, but Harrelson will reportedly be playing a character called, “The Colonel”. Based on Gary Oldman’s previous role of leading the humans in Dawn and considering the fact that this new film is called “War of the Planet of the Apes”, Harrelson will likely be rallying the troops against Caesar and the rest of our hero apes. Returning director Matt Reeves told JoBlo last year that he thinks this film’s story will finally bring Caesar’s character to almost biblical proportions saying quote, “The notion of what we’re after in the third is continue that trajectory to how he becomes the seminal figure in ape history and almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses of sorts, a kind of mythic ascension. We’re trying to play out those themes and try to explore it in this universe of exploring human nature under the guise of apes.” Though things could certainly have changed since Reeves had these thoughts last year, it seems like he has the themes and general arcs pretty locked down already. It will just be a matter of execution, but if Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is any indicator, we’re going to be in for an epic action adventure. Though is hasn’t yet been confirmed, it’s assumed that Andy Serkis will return to the role of Caesar. No word yet if we can expect any other former cast members to return, but with a current release date of July 14th, 2017, we don’t expect any solid plot details for a while.
