Like the real Evel Knievel, the planned biopic of the famed daredevil is starting to build tons of hype. The Tracking Board is reporting that director Darren Aronofsky has signed on to helm a biopic about the famed stuntman tentatively titled Evel Knievel, following suit with other vaguely titled Aronofsky films such as The Wrestler, Black Swan and Noah. Channing Tatum, who has long been attached as a producer on the film will reportedly star in the film with a new draft of the script written by Scott Silver known for his work on 8 Mile as well as the Darren Aronofsky produced film The Fighter. Magic Mike’s Reid Carolin wrote the original draft of the Knievel script, which has been an obsession of sorts for Channing since as early as 2012 with the actor even mentioning his absolute fanaticism with Knievel last year when he sat down for an interview with Jimmy Fallon. Like all news in Hollywood though, this report comes with several to the contrary. Other sites are reporting that this is far from a done deal yet and Aronofsky is purely in early negotiations to helm the biopic. The last time an Evel Knievel biopic was attempted was back in 1971 in a film starring George Hamilton that’s about as revered today as the 1990 Captain America. Really though, beyond watching a documentary entitled Being Evel Knievel that came out earlier this year or YouTubing some of the great stuntman’s original work, nothing on film has come close to capturing Evel’s absolute sense of fearlessness and charisma and no, Hot Rod doesn’t count. One way or another though, we’re hoping this film gets made so a new generation can be introduced to what Knievel did for stunt work and entertainment. Time will tell whether or not that film will be directed by Darren Aronofsky, but until then, what do you think?
