Sounds like the Pacific Rim sequel is being put on its reserve thrusters as Legendary and Universal opt to move forward with a Godzilla vs. King Kong feature instead. Despite Pacific Rim bringing in a kaiju-sized amount of money - $441 million worldwide to be exact – The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Universal execs are still timid to put on a sequel when almost half of that money would have to go back into a sequel’s production budget. This isn’t exactly the first time a Guillermo del Toro film has been cancelled due to budgetary concerns or other issues as the famous creator and director is known for having larger ideas than studios sometimes want to spend. Possibly connected is the fact that his next project, Crimson Peak due out next month, was denied financing by Universal for not bowing to their PG-13 rating expectation, leaving Legendary Pictures to front the check for the R-rated flick. Bad blood between the Production Company and studio was more than hinted at, so for the time being, it appears Pacific Rim 2 won’t be making its August 4th, 2017 release date and could be scrapped altogether. Things aren’t all bad though as it looks like Legendary and Universal having tentative plans to move forward with a Godzilla vs. King Kong movie with potential for the two to potentially team up. According to THR, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island will make mention of “Monarch”, the secret government organization that was focused on in Godzilla. Throwing in a Monarch reference pretty much guarantees us that we’ll be seeing a King Kong / Godzilla smashup one way or another, but will likely come with issues to overcome, mainly the huge size difference between the two monsters. According to one unnamed Universal insider, Kong would have to be the size of the Empire State Building rather than hang off it to logically compete with the latest incarnation of Godzilla, but Legendary reportedly has plans on how it could potentially work. In the meantime, we can look forward to the launch of a shared Godzilla/King Kong universe when Kong: Skull Island arrives in theaters on March 10th, 2017 followed by Godzilla 2 on June 8th, 2018, but what do you think?
