With just a little over a year before it’s set to hit theaters, next year’s Gambit movie just lost a major player. Earlier this summer, it was rumored that star Channing Tatum was considering exiting the upcoming Gambit X-Men spinoff, but the rumor was quickly put to rest after he officially signed on. Now, the film is facing the certain exit of another prominent figure, director Rupert Wyatt. Production was set to begin this November in Louisiana, but a reported change in the script caused an increase in the budget that ultimately lead to production being pushed to March. Due to the start date change, Wyatt has officially exited the project saying in a statement, “I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film." No word on which project Wyatt is exiting Gambit for, but the hunt is now on to find a replacement. Marvel Studios went through a similar issue last year when director Edgar Wright exited Ant-Man shortly before that film was set to go into production. His exit was over creative differences though and that doesn’t appear to be the case with Wyatt’s exit, but does lead many to wonder if the film will make its October 7th, 2016 release date. Fox already has two other X-Men movies set for next year; February’s Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse which is currently set for May 27th. Seven months to shoot and edit a special effects heavy tentpole movie may deem too big a task for what the studio hopes will be a worthy successor to Hugh Jackman’s exiting “Wolverine” character.
