Vin Diesel responds to reports of a troubled Fast and Furious 8 and promises a new trilogy to end the saga. Last week The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the eighth installment of the popular Fast and Furious franchise was undergoing some serious behind-the-scenes drama as the April 2017 release draws closer and the studio has still not found a director. Furious 7 director James Wan was offered what a source described as “life-altering money” to return to helm the eight film after longtime Fast and Furious director Justin Lin passed to direct next year’s Star Trek Beyond. Lin reportedly turned down the offer to direct Fast 8 in order to helm next year’s The Conjuring sequel and also wasn’t ready to return to such a difficult franchise after the demands of Furious 7. With Diesel reportedly needing to be consulted on who directs the next installment, some at Universal reportedly fear that Diesel himself may want to direct Fast 8 after having helmed the 2009 Fast and Furious short film, Los Bandoleros. After the recent article, Diesel took to Facebook to update fans on the process saying Fast producer Neal Moritz would love for him to just sign off on a director, but the franchise is too special and must be handled carefully. He went on to confirm that no one has been offered the job to direct Fast 8 or have even seen the script and he will announce the directors on his next post. And yes, you heard that right, “directors” as in more than one, because Diesel also confirmed that he has promised the studio quote, “one last Trilogy to end the saga.” Back in November, it was rumored that the franchise would end with Fast and Furious 9, but with Diesel’s announcement, it looks like we can look forward to a tenth installment which doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering Furious 7 earned over $1.5 billion at the box office this year. It also sounds like we can expect multiple directors to be taking on the new trilogy which seems to suggest the films won’t be shot back-to-back as previously rumored. As for which directors will take over the franchise, we’ll have to wait for Vin’s next post, but what do you think?
