What do you get when you put some of the most talented writers in a room together for two weeks talking about Transformers? An animated movie. We recently told you that Paramount Pictures had brought together writers like Black Hawk Down’s Ken Nolan, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight to work on ideas for an expanded Transformers universe. Led by Transformers 5 writer Akiva Goldsman, the plan was to take a TV writer’s room approach to collaborate on ideas and for each writer to develop a treatment and pitch their ideas to Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Hasbro and the studio. Deadline now reports that the experiment is now over and the results are a blueprint for the planned 2017 sequel starring Mark Wahlberg that will reportedly begin production in June and an animated feature from Ant-Man writer Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. The animated feature will be an origin story focusing on the Autobots and Decepticons home planet, Cybertron that does not currently have a release date. As for the possibilities of an expanded universe that will spinoff various characters, there are currently no plans, but the process of bringing this group of writers together reportedly got Spielberg and Bay excited about the prospects and additional films may be announced in the future. Deadline initially reported that Michael Bay was set to helm Transformers 5, but shortly after the article posted, Bay tweeted out saying he has yet to commit to directing the sequel and recently met with Spielberg to discuss.
