Hollywood has lost another legendary director as Wes Craven past away in his home at the age of 76 surrounded by friends and family. One of the most iconic horror directors of all-time, Craven launched his filmmaking career back in 1972 with The Last House on the Left, which he wrote, directed and edited. He followed that up a few years later with The Hills Have Eyes and Swamp Thing before creating one of the most iconic horror characters ever, Freddy Krueger in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. Craven is of course also the director behind the genre bending Scream films that launched in 1996 and despite best known for directing horror films, Craven also delved into other genres including the 1999 musical drama, Music of the Heart, which earned star Meryl Streep an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. His most recent directing credit was 2011’s Scream 4 and acting as executive producer on the MTV Scream series. In a statement, MTV said, “Wes Craven was a tremendous visionary whose sensibility for scares has connected with generations of MTV fans. We are honored to have worked with him and proud to carry on his legacy with Scream. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.” Other colleagues and admirers of Craven took to Twitter to honor him including Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn who tweeted, “Heartbroken about the loss of Wes Craven. He was an incredible inspiration as a director and, more so, a very kind man.” Kevin Smith, who worked with Craven on Scream 3 and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back tweeted, “Fare thee well horror-Gretzky WES CRAVEN. Talented, good guy.” Actor Bruce Campbell paid tribute to Craven by posting this pic from The Evil Dead franchise which featured Freddie’s glove hanging in the background saying about Craven quote, “He showed us the way.” Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, who worked with Craven on Scream 2 expressed her gratitude for the chance to work with him as did Scream 3 star Scott Foley while original Scream star Skeet Ulrich tweeted out, “So sad to hear the news about Wes. An amazing man on set and off and I owe so much to his talents. He will be sorely missed by many…” Fellow horror director icon John Carpenter reacted to the news tweeting, “Devastated to hear the news. Wes was a great friend, fine director and good man. Giant loss. Much too soon,” while Saw and The Conjuring director James Wan responded with quote, “Can’t believe the news. Heartfelt sadness and deepest condolences with the passing of Wes Craven. Truly one of the my biggest inspirations.” Wes Craven was a one-of-a-kind writer, director and producer whose contribution to film and particularly the horror genre is immeasurable.
