Popular first-person shooter Borderlands is set to get the big screen treatment and is bringing a Spider-Man producer along for the ride. Just a day after we got our first look at Michael Fassbender in the upcoming adaptation of next year’s Assassin’s Creed movie, Lionsgate has announced they are partnering with former Marvel Studios co-founder Avi Arad to create a feature film based on the Borderlands video game franchise. Launched in 2009, Borderlands is a role-playing game set on the planet Pandora that has been abandoned by a mega-corporation and now inhabited by dangerous creatures and gangs of bandits. Mercenaries known as “Vault Hunters” brave the harsh elements in search of fortune in the form of alien technology rumored to exist there. The game, along with its 2012 sequel, received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and has sold over 26 million copies worldwide. For those concerned with Hollywood giving us a water-downed adaptation of the game, Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said quote, “This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight Borderlands current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.” Borderlands will be just one of several video game adaptations that Avi Arad and his son Ari will be developing. The pair are also working on a movie based on the Uncharted franchise that is set to arrive in theaters on June 30th, 2017 and a Metal Gear Solid movie, that currently doesn’t have a release date. Avi most recently was a producer on The Amazing Spider-Man films and an executive producer on this summer’s Fantastic Four.
