We’re set to get a much younger version of “Peter Parker” than we’ve seen before on the big screen and with it a much younger version of “Aunt May” too. This is definitely NOT your parent’s Spider-Man as Variety reports that Marisa Tomei has landed the role of Parker’s guardian “Aunt May” in the 2017 Spider-Man movie. Sources couldn’t confirm how far along the deal-making process is, but Marvel and Sony reportedly made her an offer last week and though newly cast “Spider-Man” Tom Holland will make his debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, Tomei isn’t expected to be introduced until the new Spider-Man film debuts on July 28th, 2017. Despite the studio still looking to secure a screenwriter for the reboot, insiders tell Variety that they wanted to secure actors for some role early to clear up schedules in order to shoot next year. Tomei is best known for her Oscar winning role in My Cousin Vinny and will next be seen opposite Amy Schumer in the comedy Trainwreck out next week. As you’re probably aware, the character of Aunt May has normally been depicted as an elderly matriarch to Parker with Rosemary Harris playing the role in the first trilogy and Sally Field taking on the role in The Amazing Spider-Man films. With the new films expected to focus on Peter in high school for at least three films, going with a younger actress seems reasonable, despite what many fans may think of the decision.
