Fans have been wondering how the character “Wasp” could factor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel president Kevin Feige is spilling the beans! Needless to say, there will be Ant-Man spoilers ahead so if you want to go into the movie fresh, now would be the time to go check out another one of our cool vids. So, for those of you still here, Wasp, aka “Janet Van Dyne”, has been a character that has been close to making an appearance in the MCU for some time. Joss Whedon included the founding member of The Avengers in early drafts of the first Avengers movie as a possible replacement for Black Widow, but when Scarlett Johansson’s schedule worked out, she was cut. When it was announced that an Ant-Man movie would be made, many assumed we’d finally see her in action, but those hopes were somewhat dashed when it was announced that Paul Rudd would be playing the “Scott Lang” version of the character instead of “Hank Pym”, husband to Wasp in the comics. Many fans have speculated that we could see Hank Pym’s, played by Michael Douglas and Janet Van Dyne’s daughter, “Hope Van Dyne” played by Evangeline Lilly, take on the moniker instead, but that doesn’t appear to be the case according to Feige. During a set visit, Feige revealed that we will see Janet Van Dyne in action as the Wasp and though it’s just a brief cameo that Collider says will only include a close-up of her eye, that cameo will impact heavily on the plot of the film. In a flashback scene, Wasp is somehow lost and Pym blames SHIELD and becomes resentful of superheroes. This causes Pym to make the decision to hang up the suit and is also why he doesn’t want his daughter to follow in his footsteps and decides to recruit Scott Lange, an ex-con, to become Ant-Man instead. Explaining how this dynamic works in the film, Feige told Screen Rant quote, “Another very logical question in the movie is, why are you hiring this ex-con to put on your suit and do this? The answer is, because he has abilities in cracking security networks and in pulling off heists that nobody else has…But Hope is infinitely more capable of actually being a superhero in the beginning of this film, and we learn sort of that that’s ultimately when Hank reveals for the first time for the audience, and even the first time to Hope, what actually happened in the past and why he’s so nervous about putting on that suit.” As for whether or not we’ll see Hope become Wasp, Feige says there will be things we see towards the end of the film that indicate she could at some point and Lilly has confirmed that she has a signed a multi-picture deal, so if it doesn’t happen in Ant-Man we’ll likely see it in a future Marvel film. And don’t forget the possibility that we could see Janet return at some point depending on what exactly happened to her in the past. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out when Ant-Man arrives in theaters on July 17th, but are you excited that Wasp will play at least some role in the film?
