One of the biggest summer movies ever is finally getting a sequel and with just a year to go until the film’s release an official title has been announced. During a live Q&A, director Roland Emmerich took to the stage to announce that next year’s Independence Day sequel will be titled “Independence Day Resurgence”. Regarding the title, Emmerich says getting together to do the film is like a resurgence and the film will focus on a post-war world that has come together after what they call the “War of 1996” to take on a common enemy. In addition to the film’s title, we also got a look at some of the film’s new vehicles, including a fighter jet that has been fitted with some alien anti-gravity devices as well as a vehicle known as the Moon Tug, a device that star Liam Hemsworth describes as a “forklift on the moon”. Hemsworth plays “Jake Morrison” in the film whose parents died during the first attack. Raised in an orphanage, he grows up to join the military and become an elite fighter pilot, but a bad decision gets him assigned to the unheroic job of piloting the Moon Tug. Though the cast attempted to keep spoilers to a minimum, it looks like he won’t be the only fighter pilot in the film. Maika Monroe takes over the role of “Patricia Whitmore”, daughter of Bill Pulman’s “President Whitmore” who is an accomplished pilot as well as a “Secret Service” type agent for the new President, played by Sela Ward. Will Smith and Vivica Fox’s character’s son, “Dylan Hiller”, played by Jessie Usher, will follow in his father’s footsteps and be a fighter pilot as will new addition Angelababy, who will play an orphaned Chinese fighter pilot named “Rain”. As for the other original cast members, Jeff Golblum’s “David Levinson” is now the Director of Earth Space Defense which is charged with protecting the planet from another alien attack. Vivica A. Fox’s “Jasmine” has given up stripping and is now working in a hospital and it’s unclear how Brent Spiner’s “Dr. Okun” is back, but it will somehow have something to do with him having longer hair.
