Newt Scamander just picked up another friend on his journey to writing Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Continuing the trend of outsourcing American parts to foreign actors, THR reports that Colin Farrell has recently been cast in the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff as a character named “Graves” whom Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander will meet in New York, where the film takes place. Not much is known about the True Detective star’s role at the moment, but considering Colin’s eclectic filmography, the actor’s role could range from villain to hero to comedic relief to all three and with an actor of Farrell’s caliber, it’s not out of the realm to assume that Graves will be a major player within this planned trilogy. And since Fantastic Beasts will be getting the three-film treatment, we can probably expect to see him pop up in more than just this first film. Already announced to be joining Colin and Eddie in the film are Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol. Waterston and Sudol will be playing a pair of witch sisters named Tina and Queenie, with Miller also playing a magical character type while Dan Fogler will be providing the muggle perspective. Like Farrell’s character, everyone will be American except of course Newt who will encounter all of these new friends during his adventures to document magical creatures with the help of a secret society of witches and wizards. Considering the wide array of material that’s available in a New York-set Harry Potter spinoff that takes place seventy years before the Boy-Who-Lived got his scar, we’re expecting the cast and crew are going to be delivering a pretty magical new trilogy.
