Whether or not you think Channing Tatum is a good choice to play “Gambit” in the X-Men universe, it’s now officially happening. We told you last week that The Wrap was reporting that Channing Tatum was potentially ready to exit the long in development Gambit movie over issues with his deal with 20th Century Fox, but THR reports that the star and the studio have worked out any issues and Tatum is now officially signed on to play the fan favorite mutant. Sources close to the deal do acknowledge that there were some issues that needed to be worked out, mainly how many movies Tatum would be contracted to star in as well as backend compensation, but such negotiations are not unusual and Tatum was never at the point of walking away from the project. According to sources, Fox is looking to cement Tatum’s “Gambit” as a successor to Hugh Jackman’s “Wolverine” who has been the face of the X-Men franchise and has starred in each iteration since the franchise launched in 2000. Jackman is set to retire the claws after the 2017 solo Wolverine movie and the studio is desperate to find a new star to lead the franchise. Despite reports that Tatum will not appear in Apocalypse, he is expected to appear in future X-Men movies along with additional Gambit movies, depending on the first film’s success. Production on Gambit is expected to begin mid-October in New Orleans for an October 7th, 2016 release. Fox’s commitment to the project and signs that they are looking to turn Gambit into the new Wolverine is apparent with the film’s reported $155 million budget, which will be the most expensive standalone X-Men movie to date.
